Cars & Coffee

Cars & Coffee was a project I took on with my local Armenian non-profit group to design merch for an event they were hosting called Cars & Coffee. The event was essentially a car show where people could show off their cars, hangout, and get some coffee. I worked closely with the group’s social chair, who was in charge of planning the event, and had consistent meetings to go over my progress and get her input throughout the whole design process. We ended with having two t-shirt designs and one sticker design which all sold out at the event and contributed largely to the $1,300 profit made from the event.

Starting off the design process, I was provided some pictures, by the social chair I collaborated with, that conveyed her overall stylistic ideas for the project. With these in mind, along with notes from our initial meeting, I began to draft some ideas for t-shirts and stickers.

Initial Drafts

The final drafts of the t-shirts took a combination of the first drafts. The line art style was kept, but added to the design inspired by the older car magazine advertisements. In addition to this, a version was made with a classic looking car and a newer sports car. This was done to cover the variety of cars that would be brought to the event. The final sticker took from the coffee to go cup design and simplified slightly. The car was also changed for this design to cover another style of car and create even more variety.

For my initial shirt designs, I took a few different directions. The first, being the race car, was a less realistic take attempting to incorporate the coffee aspect into the design. The next two played with the idea of car magazine ads. One takes from older car ads that had large text and were more direct and bold, while the other takes from newer car ads being darker and sleeker. The final shirt design took more directly from the inspiration I was given and followed the line art style for the car. For my initial sticker designs, I went with two different directions. The first one played on a coffee cup design and implemented my designs on the sleeve of a to go cup. The other designs took inspiration from mechanic patches.
